ASK JEEVES

when Paul James was growing up in New Jersey, his mother often left him in the company of female neighbors while she went off and performed as a professional musician.  James says it was an eye-opening experience and a time during which he learned to cook a wide variety of ethnic dishes.

“I grew up doing the cooking and serving,” said James, a husky man whose sophisticated demeanor recalls the stereotypical butler. “It was something I enjoyed doing. I took great pride in my work.”

That strong work ethic has carried over into his current position as a butler for well-to-do Valley families. James, who earned bachelor’s degrees in both English and music, says his ability to think on his feet, anticipating the requests of his clients, has served him well.

“If you can anticipate what he’s looking for, that’s really a high point,” James says.

It was never more true than when James worked for the late syndicated radio commentator Paul Harvey and his wife, Angel, whom he served from 1991 to 1993 and then again in 1995 and 1996. In the later years, James was asked to train a new butler for the Harveys, and James says the newbie was amazed at how well he could anticipate the Harveys’ needs.

“I can look across the room and look at Mrs. Harvey and know this is what she wanted done,” James said.

Company: Employed by Camelview Domestic Placement Service

Years on the Job: 25

Clients: Former clients include several Scottsdale doctors, a distributor of Michelob in California, and the late radio commentator Paul Harvey, who lived in the Biltmore area.

Hours: The average day is 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., though hours tend to vary. Daily chores include washing dishes, cleaning bedrooms, laundry, light housekeeping tasks and lunch preparation.

TV/Film vs. Reality: “In the movies, you see a lot more of the European butler. The European butler does a little bit more of the household bookkeeping, taking care of the staff. The American butler is usually singular, and usually they don’t have much of a staff.”

Best Part: “A job well done. I like being able to have a beautiful presentation on a dinner table, have everything set just so and seeing the smile on people’s faces. You get the ‘wow’ factor. That’s like the applause of being on stage and performing.”

Worst Part: The downside is when James gets ahead of himself and he needs to appear busy.

That’s Entertainment: An opera singer who has performed with the Arizona Opera, James often tickles the ivories and sings for his clients. On the side, he teaches music and voice lessons.

Salary: A butler’s salary range is $65,000 to $150,000 a year plus benefits. With some positions, private quarters are provided.
